Future Careers within the Fort Wayne Fire Department

The following are 40-hour positions that can be achieved through promotion, and the duties are conducted outside of the Engine Houses:

Captain – Investigator – This career involves overseeing all investigations related to the fire service, including but not limited to, fire investigation, vehicle crashes, arson etc.  This position has full firefighter and full police powers. 

Captain Inspector – This career involves the individual inspecting all businesses within the City of Fort Wayne to assure the facilities are up to code and remain fire code compliant.  

Captain Fire Prevention/Public Education – This career involves educating the public and youth on fire safety. The programs are conducted at public facilities and at our Safety Village campus. 

Captain Training – This career involves training all academy recruits to prepare them for the firefighter career.  This career also carries out the training for all firefighters in the Operations Division.

District Chief – Training – The individual in this position supervises the Training Captains.

District Chief – Logistics – This career involves managing the tools and equipment for the Fire Department, and assists Fire Apparatus Manufacturers in the design, layout, and construction of all fire department apparatus.

District Chief – IT – This career involves managing the IT system of the fire department in conjunction with the City of Fort Wayne IT Department.

District Chief – Health and Safety – This career involves managing the department’s safety program, the evaluation and purchase of safety equipment and the evaluation and purchase of fitness equipment. This individual oversees the Academy’s Physical Training Program. 

District Chief – Investigator – This position is the supervisor of the Fire Investigation Division and the immediate supervisor of the Captain Investigators.

There are also Specialty Teams available for firefighters:

SCUBA/Dive Team; Hazmat; SORT – (Special Operations Rescue Team) ; SCBA Technician.
